CB306 - Dorei Clay Bell from Aichi 愛知
This dorei (土鈴) clay bell comes from Aichi Prefecture (愛知県) and is shaped as a cheerful rooster (酉 / tori). Its rounded, it finished in a warm ochre tone, with a vivid red comb and wattles, simple black-and-white feather details, and a purple hanging cord that gives the piece a lively folk-art character.
On the side is a gold medallion marked 愛知 (Aichi), identifying it as a regional souvenir or commemorative folk craft from the prefecture.
Located in the Chūbu region of central Japan, Aichi is a prefecture with a particularly rich craft heritage. It is home to historic ceramic traditions such as Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) and Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼), both of which have played an important role in the development of Japanese pottery for centuries. Aichi is also closely associated with Nagoya, its largest city, and with a wide variety of traditional folk crafts, festival culture, and locally produced souvenirs.
The rooster is one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (十二支, jūnishi) and traditionally represents punctuality, courage, diligence, and the arrival of a new beginning. Because the rooster announces the dawn, it has also long been associated with awakening, light, and the dispelling of darkness.
Dorei bells were commonly produced throughout Japan as regional souvenirs, seasonal ornaments, and auspicious keepsakes. Their simple forms and gentle sound make them especially appealing examples of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
