A charming Japanese Snake (巳) dorei clay bell by Yakushigama (薬師窯), created as an auspicious eto (干支) ornament celebrating the Year of the Snake.

The snake is interpreted in a wonderfully gentle, stylized form, with a rounded white body, simple painted features and a bright red hanging cord. Small red plum-like accents add another festive touch to the composition.

In Japanese tradition, the Snake (巳 / Mi) is regarded as an auspicious creature associated with renewal, transformation and prosperity. Because a snake repeatedly sheds its skin, it has long been connected with regeneration and new beginnings. White snakes in particular have strong auspicious associations in Japanese folk belief and are often linked with good fortune and wealth.

This piece is also a dorei (土鈴), a traditional Japanese earthenware bell. Dorei have long been produced as regional souvenirs, shrine-related objects and seasonal charms, their gentle sound traditionally associated with auspicious wishes and protection from misfortune.
Crafted by Yakushigama (薬師窯), a renowned Japanese ceramic maker with roots in a pottery tradition spanning more than 1,000 years, the piece reflects the enduring appeal of Japanese folk-inspired ceramics. Yakushigama is particularly known for its colourful zodiac figures, lucky animals and other auspicious ornaments.
