FT397 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Suizenji 水前寺
This omiyage kokeshi wall decoration from Suizenji (水前寺) captures a nostalgic scene inspired by traditional rural life in Kumamoto. The piece is constructed with a woven straw shelter backdrop, evoking the appearance of a small rustic hut or protective thatched wall often seen in countryside settings.
At the center hangs a small circular straw ornament inscribed with 「おてもやん」 (Otemoyan), a reference to the beloved folk character and traditional Kumamoto folk song that celebrates the cheerful spirit of the region. Below the ornament hangs a bundle of straw, adding texture and reinforcing the rustic atmosphere of the display.
To the right side of the shelter is a miniature wooden ladder, where two tiny kokeshi-style figures are playfully seated. The figures are painted with smiling expressions and simple clothing patterns, representing children enjoying a peaceful countryside moment. Their rounded heads and minimal facial features follow the warm aesthetic typical of souvenir kokeshi dolls.
A small vertical plaque reading 「水前寺」 (Suizenji) identifies the location associated with the piece—most likely referring to Suizenji Jōjuen Garden in Kumamoto, a famous historic strolling garden known for its beautiful landscapes and cultural heritage.
