This charming Nagashi-bina (流し雛, "Floating Hina Dolls") folk craft is a beautifully preserved example of one of Japan's oldest Hinamatsuri traditions. Handmade in Tottori Prefecture, it represents the ancient custom of sending paper dolls down a river to carry away misfortune, illness, and impurity while praying for health, happiness, and a peaceful future.

Unlike the elaborate imperial Hina doll displays commonly seen today, Nagashi-bina preserves an older purification ritual that predates the modern Doll Festival. During Hinamatsuri (March 3rd), simple paper dolls were once floated along rivers as symbolic substitutes for the owner, allowing life's hardships and bad fortune to drift away with the current. This practice evolved from ancient Shinto purification ceremonies and remains one of Japan's most meaningful seasonal customs.

Tottori is one of the few regions where this tradition has been faithfully preserved. Every spring, the Nagashi-bina Festival is still celebrated, with families releasing handmade paper dolls into rivers while offering prayers for children's health, safe growth, good fortune, and protection from misfortune.

This delightful display recreates that ceremonial scene. The tiny white-faced dolls dressed in vibrant red kimono with plum blossom motifs are carefully arranged on a wooden platform, accompanied by its original presentation box and explanatory leaflet. The handcrafted simplicity reflects the warmth and elegance of Japanese mingei (folk art), where everyday objects carry deep cultural meaning.
