This vintage Fugu Whistle (ふぐ笛) is part of the celebrated Kakiuchi Ningyō (垣内敬一人形) tradition and was handcrafted by Hisako Kakiuchi (垣内ひさ子, born 1949), who continues the artistic legacy established by her father, the renowned folk craft artist Keiichi Kakiuchi (垣内敬一, 1921–1968). Produced in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the city known throughout Japan as the nation's "Fugu Capital," this charming ceramic whistle captures the playful spirit of one of the region's most iconic symbols.

Following the passing of Keiichi Kakiuchi, Hisako Kakiuchi inherited the workshop and has continued producing Kakiuchi Ningyō, preserving the warm, handcrafted style that made the family name well known among collectors of Japanese folk art. This whistle features the signature oversized eyes, rounded form, and expressive hand-painted details characteristic of the Kakiuchi workshop, while functioning as a genuine whistle that produces a soft, nostalgic tone.

A charming example of mingei (Japanese folk art), this piece is both a delightful souvenir from western Japan and a collectible work representing one of the country's most distinctive regional craft traditions.

As a vintage item, it shows signs of age and use, including a visible hairline crack, which does not diminish its decorative appeal or historical character but instead reflects its authentic history and decades of careful preservation.
