This charming Japanese Inu Hariko (犬張子) toy depicts the traditional white guardian dog in a lightweight plastic form. Inspired by the classic papier-mâché folk toys of Japan, it retains the distinctive rounded body, upright ears, curled red tail, and cheerful hand-painted expression associated with Inu Hariko.
The figure is decorated in vivid red, black, blue, green, and gold tones. Its body features a stylised ornamental bib and floral motifs, while the softly irregular brushwork gives each detail a warm, handmade character. Although produced in plastic rather than traditional washi paper, the piece faithfully captures the playful appearance and auspicious symbolism of the original folk design.
Inu Hariko have long been associated with safe childbirth, healthy growth, and the protection of children, as dogs were admired for giving birth safely and caring devotedly for their young. They were traditionally displayed as protective charms and given as gifts to expectant mothers or families with small children.
