A charming vintage Hariko Daruma (張子だるま), a traditional Japanese papier-mâché folk craft associated with perseverance, good fortune, and the determination to keep moving forward.

Made from lightweight papier-mâché, this Daruma is finished in the classic vivid red, with a softly painted face, bold black eyebrows and moustache, and decorative gold-toned details around the body. The slightly irregular surface and hand-painted brushwork give the piece the warm, expressive character typical of traditional hariko craftsmanship.

Daruma dolls are inspired by Bodhidharma (Daruma 達磨), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Their rounded form is traditionally connected with the saying 七転び八起き (nanakorobi yaoki) — “Fall seven times, rise eight” — making Daruma enduring symbols of resilience, perseverance, success, and good luck.
