FT604 - Antique Japanese Shogi Chess Set 御將棋駒
A charming antique Japanese Shogi (将棋) set, featuring traditional wooden game pieces accompanied by a beautifully aged wooden storage box.
Often described as Japanese chess, Shogi is a traditional strategy board game with centuries of history, deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Unlike Western chess, Shogi features distinctive pentagonal pieces inscribed with kanji characters identifying their ranks, including the King (玉将), Rook (飛車), Bishop (角行), Gold General (金将), and other pieces. One of its most fascinating features is the ability to return captured pieces to the board, adding a unique dimension to the game.
The wooden pieces feature hand-brushed-style calligraphy in black ink, with selected characters in red on their reverse sides to indicate promoted ranks. Their naturally aged surfaces, subtle variations in wood grain, and traditional lettering reflect the understated beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
Please note that this set may be incomplete, with some pieces potentially missing. The exact number and selection of pieces are shown in the photographs. Due to its age and uncertain completeness, it is being sold primarily as a collectible and decorative object rather than as a complete playable game.
