This charming Tenkonin (てんこ人形) is a hand-carved wooden folk doll created by Fujii Kōu (藤井香雨), an artist dedicated to preserving one of the most distinctive regional folk crafts of Kuma Town (久万町, now Kumakōgen) in Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.

Tenkonin originated as a heartfelt tribute to the children of the mountainous region, where long winters, deep snow, and steep roads once made the daily journey to school both difficult and demanding. Wrapped in thick hooded garments to protect themselves from the cold, these children became the inspiration for the doll's simple geometric form. The name "Tenkonin" comes from the local dialect referring to these warmly dressed youngsters.

According to the accompanying historical leaflet, this folk doll was first conceived by local educators and community members during the postwar years as both a souvenir and a symbol of the region's resilience. More than simply depicting a child, the doll represents perseverance, kindness, and the hope that education would flourish even in remote mountain villages. Its minimalist design, carefully carved from a single block of wood, reflects the quiet beauty and honesty that define Japanese Mingei (folk art).

Artist Fujii Kōu (藤井香雨) continued this tradition with great respect, preserving the doll's distinctive form while celebrating the warmth of handcrafted simplicity. The softly smiling face, carved hood, and clean architectural lines give the figure a timeless charm that feels both modern and deeply rooted in rural Japanese culture.
