K05080 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Shiobara Onsen 塩原温泉
This charming vintage Omiyage Kokeshi (おみやげこけし) comes from Shiobara Onsen (塩原温泉) in Tochigi Prefecture, a historic hot-spring area surrounded by mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and deep forest scenery.
The doll has a particularly rustic regional character, with a rounded gourd-like body, a small smiling face, and a broad kasa-style travelling hat. Its body is painted mainly in deep green and natural wood tones, with expressive brushwork suggesting mountain plants and seasonal scenery. A purple-and-white braided cord with tassels is tied around the neck, adding a decorative textile element to the otherwise earthy design.
Handwritten Japanese characters appear around the lower body, reinforcing its identity as a travel souvenir connected with Shiobara Onsen. Rather than following one of the formal traditional kokeshi lineages, this piece belongs to the world of regional omiyage kokeshi, where makers often used unusual silhouettes, local inscriptions, landscape motifs, and folk-inspired costumes to capture the atmosphere of a particular destination.
Shiobara has long been known as a mountain hot-spring retreat, and the doll’s traveller-like hat, green palette, and naturalistic decoration beautifully evoke the forested landscape of the area. Its softly aged surface and slightly faded hand-painted details give it the warm, nostalgic character associated with Shōwa-era Japanese souvenir crafts.
