K10209 - Omiyage Kokeshi Doll by Gyokujin 玉仁
This omiyage kokeshi sculpture Holding Drum is a finely crafted work by Gyokujin 玉仁, a recognized name in souvenir kokeshi craftsmanship, and originates from Awazu Onsen 粟津温泉, one of Japan’s oldest hot spring resorts in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Unlike traditional upright kokeshi, this piece takes on a narrative, sculptural form. The small figure is shown seated, gently leaning against a hand drum (taiko) tied with a braided cord. With its head resting softly against the drum and eyes half-closed, the figure conveys a sense of quiet rest—perhaps after play, music, or a festival performance. This intimate pose gives the work a warm, human quality.
The base bears the artist’s signature Gyokujin 玉仁, linking it to the tradition of regional souvenir craftsmanship. As a piece from Awazu Onsen, it reflects the culture of onsen travel, where visitors bring home small handcrafted objects that capture moments of relaxation and local character.
