K15183 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Iwate 岩手
A charming vintage omiyage kokeshi from Iwate Prefecture 岩手県 , located in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. Rather than belonging to one of the strict traditional kokeshi lineages, this piece was likely created as a regional souvenir and literary keepsake.
Its most distinctive feature is the handwritten poem running vertically down the body. The inscription is a famous tanka by Ishikawa Takuboku 石川啄木, one of Japan’s best-known modern poets and a native of Iwate Prefecture. The poem appears in his celebrated collection Ichiaku no Suna 一握の砂 (A Handful of Sand):
The poem evokes the soft greening of willow trees along the Kitakami River, a landscape deeply associated with Iwate. This connection between Takuboku, the Kitakami River, and the doll’s regional origin gives the piece a particularly strong sense of place and nostalgia.
The restrained design, muted palette, and visible age give the doll a strong wabi-sabi character. Surface fading, small marks, and patina remain visible and contribute to its authentic vintage appeal.
