This traditional Togatta-style kokeshi was crafted by Norio Sato (佐藤憲雄, 1948–1995), a second-generation artisan deeply rooted in the heart of Togatta’s kokeshi-making culture. The doll showcases the elegance and precision that define the Togatta lineage, with a softly curved form and a serene expression. The head is adorned with a vibrant red sunray-style hair motif, while the body features repeating chrysanthemum-like red blossoms, balanced by green leaves and rhythmic brushstrokes, all typical of the classic Togatta aesthetic.

Born on June 6, 1948, in Togatta Shinchi, Norio was the eldest son of renowned craftsman Teruo Sato. After graduating from Togatta Junior High School in 1963, he immediately began training under his father and was producing kokeshi by 1964. His early start and familial mentorship gave him a solid foundation in traditional techniques, which he refined throughout his career.

More than just a craftsman, Norio was a passionate advocate for the future of kokeshi-making. Toward the end of the Showa era, he was instrumental in forming the Togatta Young Craftsmen’s Association and the Bi-Rolling Society, aiming to unite and empower a new generation of artisans. He was known among his peers not only for his skill but also for his kindness and leadership.

Despite his early passing, his legacy lives on in the Togatta community and in the careful lines and quiet spirit of dolls like this one—a tribute to a craftsman who blended tradition with a forward-looking vision.
