K20160 - Sosaku Shingata Kokeshi by Kanazawa Tokushige 金沢徳重
This elegant Shingata Kokeshi, entitled Kuro Botan (黒牡丹, "Black Peony"), was created by Kanazawa Tokushige (金沢徳重, 1920–1986), a respected kokeshi artisan from Fukushima Prefecture. Although officially recognized as a Traditional Kokeshi craftsman, Kanazawa also explored the expressive possibilities of Shingata (new-style) kokeshi, producing works that retained the refined spirit of tradition while embracing a more poetic and decorative sensibility.
The doll immediately draws attention through its understated beauty. Carved from pale natural wood, the body is adorned with a striking monochrome depiction of a black peony, accompanied by a delicate peony bud rising gracefully on a slender stem. Executed with remarkable restraint, the floral motif resembles an ink painting, allowing the contrast between the deep black pigment and the soft wood grain to take centre stage.
In Japanese culture, the peony (botan) has long been celebrated as the "King of Flowers," symbolising elegance, prosperity, honour, and feminine beauty. The choice of a black peony lends the design an additional layer of sophistication and mystery. Rather than relying on vibrant colours, Kanazawa conveys depth and emotion through subtle tonal variations, creating a composition that feels both powerful and serene.
The kokeshi's expression is equally refined. Its softly closed eyes, tiny crimson lips, and gently rounded face evoke a sense of quiet contemplation. The stylised black coiffure and fine decorative bands at the collar and base frame the figure with understated elegance, reflecting Kanazawa Tokushige's exceptional control of line and proportion.
