A  Sōsaku Kokeshi created by Japanese craftsman Chūichi Ōe (大江忠一), dating from around the 1980s, during the later Shōwa period. Its tall cylindrical body is decorated with striking bands of deep red and black, punctuated by delicate natural motifs left in the warm tone of the wood. The rounded head features a gentle, youthful expression, with softly painted eyes, a tiny red mouth, and stylized black hair. The combination gives the doll a wonderfully nostalgic Shōwa-era character.

Ōe was active during a period when creative kokeshi had become both collectible works of decorative art and treasured souvenirs of travel within Japan. Dated examples of his work are known from around Shōwa 58 (1983), placing his production firmly within the flourishing kokeshi culture of the 1980s.

Some of Ōe's dolls bear the names of celebrated historic destinations, including Chūson-ji (中尊寺) in Iwate Prefecture. This suggests that part of his production was created or distributed as high-quality artisan miyage (旅土産) for visitors travelling through northern Japan.

With its bold retro palette, understated decoration and serene expression, this piece is a lovely example of 1980s Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi design, combining regional souvenir culture with the individual creativity of the modern kokeshi movement.
