An unusual and expressive Sosaku Kokeshi, featuring a distinctive contemporary artistic style that sets it apart from traditional Japanese kokeshi dolls.
Handcrafted from wood, this remarkable piece combines a minimalist facial expression with bold, abstract brushwork. Its elongated, cylindrical body is decorated with free-flowing geometric forms and expressive strokes in earthy shades of black, muted green, reddish brown, and ochre, creating an almost painterly composition.
The doll's rounded head features delicately painted eyes, a small nose, and a single sweeping black hair motif, giving it a charming yet mysterious personality. The unusual proportions and experimental decoration reflect the creative freedom associated with the Sosaku Kokeshi movement, in which individual artisans explore personal artistic expression beyond the conventions of regional kokeshi traditions.
The piece is signed 沙緒 (Sao), unlike more conventional decorative kokeshi, this example has a striking sculptural presence, reminiscent of Japanese modernist and abstract folk art. Its warm wooden surface, restrained colour palette, and expressive composition make it particularly appealing to collectors of Japanese vintage design and contemporary-inspired folk crafts.
