This distinctive omiyage kokeshi comes from Ginzan (銀山), most likely Ginzan Onsen in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Created as a regional travel souvenir, it combines the familiar form of a kokeshi doll with the rustic beauty of a natural tree branch.
The doll features a large rounded head with a serene expression, narrow black eyes and stylised traditional hair. Its tall body retains sections of natural bark at the upper and lower edges, contrasting beautifully with the polished central panel. The deep reddish-brown surface is decorated with hand-painted gold Japanese calligraphy and a flowing landscape motif, giving the piece a warm and nostalgic character.
Ginzan Onsen (銀山温泉) is a secluded hot-spring town nestled in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. Its name means “Silver Mine Hot Spring” and refers to the historic Nobesawa Silver Mine, which flourished during the early Edo period. According to local tradition, the thermal springs were discovered by miners around five centuries ago. Today, Ginzan is celebrated for its atmospheric riverside townscape, traditional multi-storey wooden ryokan and old-fashioned gas lamps, particularly enchanting beneath the region’s heavy winter snow.
Unlike traditional lineage kokeshi, omiyage kokeshi were produced as decorative souvenirs representing hot-spring resorts, scenic destinations and regional landmarks throughout Japan. This rustic example would have served as a memento of a visit to Ginzan, preserving the memory and atmosphere of this historic mountain settlement.
