A striking Naruko Kokeshi by Toshio Sato (佐藤俊雄, born 1935), presented here in an impressive 35 cm size. With its tall proportions, vivid floral decoration, and beautifully controlled brushwork, this is a particularly elegant example of Sato’s work.
Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1935, Sato became familiar with woodcarving from a young age while observing the skilled craftsmen at the Oikawa Masao Factory in Naruko. In 1952, he studied painting and coloring under Onuma Shinbei, whose precise technique had a lasting influence on Sato’s own style. By 1957, Sato had begun producing kokeshi himself, and in 1964 he established his own workshop in Naruko Onsen. Alongside his own production, he also supplied turned wooden blanks to other respected makers, including Takahashi Josuke and Onuma Kimiko.
This example is especially eye-catching for its bold red chrysanthemum-style floral decoration, complemented by dark green leaves and fine black linear bands at the neck and base. The bright red detailing continues onto the head, framing the face with stylized floral accents. The doll’s softly rounded head, delicately painted eyes, and small red mouth give it a calm and gentle expression characteristic of traditional Naruko workmanship.
The kokeshi is accompanied by its original vintage storage box, adding further appeal for collectors.
