A distinctive vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) print featuring the bold calligraphy 「一誠」 (Issei) by Japanese statesman Yūji Osada / Osada Yūji (長田裕二, 1917–2003).
The composition is dominated by the dramatically brushed character 誠 (makoto), meaning sincerity, honesty, faithfulness, or integrity, preceded by the character 一, meaning “one” or “single.” Together, 一誠 conveys the spirit of single-minded sincerity—approaching one's duties and relationships with unwavering honesty and wholehearted devotion.
Executed in vigorous black brushwork against the simplicity of the shikishi board, the calligraphy has a strong and dignified presence. The inscription at the left identifies Osada with his governmental title, while the red seals provide a traditional finishing accent.
Yūji Osada was a prominent Japanese politician and senior figure in postwar Japanese public life. He served four terms in the House of Councillors (参議院) and held several important national positions, including Director-General of the Science and Technology Agency (科学技術庁長官) and chairman of the House of Councillors Budget Committee.
In 1991 he became the 19th President of the House of Councillors, serving until July 1992. The official records of Japan's House of Councillors confirm his position as its 19th president.
