A refined vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) print reproducing a delicate landscape and flower composition by Noda Kyūhō (野田九浦, 1879–1971), an important painter of the modern Japanese Nihonga tradition.
The scene combines blossoming plum branches, bamboo-like grasses and softly rendered pine trees, creating an atmospheric early-spring landscape. Noda Kyūhō born in Tokyo under the name Noda Dōzan, Noda Kyūhō was the grandson of the noted Confucian scholar Noda Tekiho. He developed into a highly respected figure in modern Japanese painting and was later associated with the prestigious Imperial Art Academy.
Although Kyūhō is especially known for his accomplished historical figure paintings, he also produced landscapes and flower-and-bird subjects in which traditional Japanese ink techniques are combined with careful observation from life. His paintings often show a sensitive command of line, wash and seasonal atmosphere, bridging classical Japanese aesthetics with the changing artistic environment of the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa periods.
