TC114 - Matcha bowl chawan Kyo-yaki 京焼
Vintage item, never used. A Kyo-yaki (京焼) matcha chawan crafted by Katō Kizan (加藤貴山), titled "天目型唐子遊" Chinese children engaged in traditional games. This elegant tea bowl combines the refined craftsmanship of Kyoto ceramics with a joyful decorative theme inspired by traditional East Asian art.
The bowl is formed in the graceful Tenmoku-gata (天目型) shape, characterized by its gently flared profile that sits comfortably in the hands while enhancing the appreciation of matcha. Its smooth ivory glaze provides the perfect canvas for charming hand-painted Karako (唐子) figures—playful Chinese children engaged in traditional games and seasonal festivities. Surrounding the children are auspicious motifs including kites, spinning tops, irises, and floral elements, all rendered in vibrant overglaze enamels with delicate gold accents. Soft clouds of gold create a sense of movement and elegance, giving the scene a lively yet refined atmosphere.
The Karako motif has been cherished in Japanese decorative arts for centuries as a symbol of innocence, happiness, prosperity, and abundant descendants. Their carefree play conveys wishes for joy, longevity, and a harmonious life, making this bowl not only beautiful but also rich in cultural meaning.
Produced by Katō Kizan (加藤貴山), the piece reflects the enduring tradition of Kyo-yaki, a ceramic style celebrated for its sophisticated hand-painted decoration, graceful forms, and close connection to the aesthetics of the Japanese tea ceremony.
