A refined vintage Annan-de (安南手) chawan for matcha, decorated in a classic blue-and-white style inspired by the ceramics historically associated with Annam (present-day Vietnam).
The bowl has a softly rounded form with a warm ivory-toned glaze and a delicate network of kannyū 貫入 crackling across the surface. Around the exterior, freely painted cobalt-blue decoration creating the relaxed, slightly rustic character that is especially admired in Annan-style tea ware. A simple blue line inside the rim completes the restrained composition.
Annan-de (安南手) became appreciated in Japanese tea culture for its soft white ground, cobalt decoration and naturally imperfect appearance. Rather than emphasizing perfect symmetry, these wares are valued for subtle irregularities, gentle glaze variation and the expressive quality of hand-painted designs—qualities that harmonize beautifully with the spirit of wabi-sabi (侘寂).
The warm crackled glaze and muted blue painting give the bowl a quiet, aged atmosphere, making it especially suited to the preparation and enjoyment of matcha.
