TC70 - Hagi-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 萩焼
TC70 - Hagi-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 萩焼
Vintage item, never used. This Hagi-yaki (萩焼) chawan embodies the quiet elegance and understated beauty that define Hagi ware. The bowl is finished in a soft, misty gray glaze with subtle variations in tone, gently pooling and thinning across the surface to reveal the warmth of the clay beneath. Fine crackling (貫入 kannyū) spreads naturally through the glaze, a hallmark of Hagi ceramics that deepens in character over time as the bowl is used.
The form is calm and well-balanced, with a gently flared rim that feels comfortable in the hands and invites a contemplative tea moment. The foot is modest and slightly rustic, showing traces of firing and iron-rich clay—details that ground the piece in the earthy traditions of Hagi pottery. Turning the bowl reveals quiet kiln marks and natural irregularities, each one a record of the firing process and the potter’s hand.
Valued in the tea ceremony for its warmth and responsiveness, this chawan reflects the wabi-sabi spirit—beauty found in simplicity, impermanence, and subtle change. With use, the glaze will gradually develop deeper tones and tea staining, allowing the bowl to mature alongside its owner, becoming more personal and expressive with time.
