Closely associated with the tea master Furuta Oribe (1544–1615), this ceramic tradition is celebrated for its unconventional shapes, bold green copper glazes, abstract decoration, and playful departure from formal symmetry. Oribe ceramics embody the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony, where individuality, spontaneity, and imperfect beauty are deeply appreciated.

This particular chawan carries a visible history of restoration. The bowl was previously broken and repaired using urushi lacquer, with dark reddish-brown lines tracing the original fractures across both its interior and exterior. Rather than concealing its past, these expressive lines have become an integral part of the bowl's appearance, creating a beautiful contrast against the green glaze and pale ceramic body.

The existing lacquer repairs also make this piece an interesting candidate for a kintsugi project, particularly for those wishing to explore the application of gold powder over traditional urushi repair lines. Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and precious metal powder, celebrates the history of an object rather than attempting to erase it.

Size: 12 x 12 x 7cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/Cover_5850ac16-dae6-4aec-8e26-e4e6f2e67b2e.jpg?v=1791422050
