AR09 - Original Artwork of Wajima-nuri 輪島塗
This 輪島塗 (Wajima-nuri) artwork is a refined example of Japan’s most prestigious lacquer tradition, presented here in a carefully composed framed display.
At the center is a small square lacquer panel depicting a shrimp (海老), rendered with exquisite realism against a deep black ground. The shrimp’s softly gradated shell tones and delicate whiskers are achieved through fine maki-e techniques, showcasing the exceptional control and patience characteristic of Wajima-nuri craftsmanship. The artist’s seal in red lacquer adds a quiet but confident finishing touch.
The panel is mounted within a textured natural-fabric mat and a dark wooden frame, creating a calm, understated contrast that draws the eye inward. On the reverse, the original paper label explains the history and prestige of Wajima lacquerware: its origins in Buddhist craftsmanship, its use of jinoko (diatomaceous earth) for durability, and its designation in 1952 as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. The plaque on the frame further identifies the work as by a Wajima-nuri certified master craftsman.
In Japanese symbolism, the shrimp represents longevity, resilience, and good fortune, making this piece not only decorative but also auspicious. Elegant yet restrained, this artwork embodies the spirit of Wajima-nuri—beauty born from strength, tradition, and meticulous handwork passed down through generations.
