This vintage clay bell (dorei) is crafted in the form of a stylized white snake, a sacred animal in Japanese folklore often associated with protection, good fortune, and transformation. It originates from Taga Taisha (多賀大社) in Shiga Prefecture, a revered Shinto shrine known as the "Shrine of Longevity and Life Extension," dedicated to the deities Izanagi and Izanami.

Adorned with striking blue and gold polka dots and bold red accents, this snake wears symbolic crests on both sides of its body, one reading 多賀大社 (Taga Taisha) and the other likely a stylized the shrine’s protective blessings. The spiral tail detail and minimalist facial expression add to its folk-art appeal.

The bell produces a gentle, dry clinking sound typical of traditional dorei and was likely offered as a protective charm or as an Eto (zodiac) item, especially for the Year of the Snake.

Dorei is a traditional handcrafted bell made from clay or ceramic, these bells produce a soft, pleasant sound when shaken. Often sold at shrines or festivals as charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune. The sound of the bell is believed to purify the surrounding environment and attract positive energy.
