CB155 - Dorei Clay Bell from Dazaifu Tenmangū 太宰府天満宮
This is a dorei (土鈴) clay bell in the shape of a white dragon, originating from Dazaifu Tenmangū (太宰府天満宮), a prominent Shinto shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture dedicated to the god of learning, Tenjin (Sugawara no Michizane).
The dragon is rendered with powerful features—its coiled body suggests coiled energy and protection, while finely etched scales and a fierce yet graceful face capture the creature’s sacred symbolism in Japanese folklore. Accents of gold on the brows and red detailing around the eyes and mouth highlight the expression, adding a refined spiritual intensity. The bell is finished in matte white with a slight weathered look, giving it a sense of age and reverence.
In East Asian mythology, the dragon is a divine, auspicious creature associated with wisdom, strength, and water. At Dazaifu Tenmangū, dragons are especially linked with the shrine’s legendary guardian flying plum tree and the belief in divine protection and academic success.
The bell includes a red hanging cord, often symbolizing protection and good fortune. Whether used as a talisman, decorative folk craft, or collectible, this dragon dorei from Dazaifu Tenmangū carries both cultural depth and spiritual meaning.
