CB156 - Dorei Clay Bell from Kōmyō-ji Temple 光明寺
This is a dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kōmyō-ji Temple (光明寺) in Kamakura, a historically significant Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) Buddhist temple located near the coast. The bell is crafted in the shape of a lotus bud, a revered symbol in Buddhism representing purity, spiritual awakening, and the promise of enlightenment.
The bell is softly sculpted with layered petal motifs in pale gold, each petal delicately etched and painted to suggest the unfolding of a sacred flower. The top of the bell features subtle blushes of pink, enhancing the sense of organic softness and spiritual warmth. A braided cord is threaded through the top for hanging or display.
Kōmyō-ji is the largest temple of the Jōdo-shū sect in Kamakura and is known for its majestic wooden gate and peaceful garden. Temple bells like this one are often sold as talismans for good fortune, protection, or spiritual connection.
This lotus-shaped dorei is not only a beautiful folk craft but also a meaningful piece reflecting the teachings of Amida Buddha and the serene aesthetic of Kamakura’s sacred heritage.
