CB175 - Japan Noto Gojinjō Dorei Bell 能登御陣乗
This unique Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) clay bell (土鈴 dorei) represents the fierce expression of a Gojinjō mask, used in the traditional Gojinjō Daiko (御陣乗太鼓) performance native to Wajima, located in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Noto Peninsula. These performances feature powerful drumming and fearsome masks, originally used to scare away invaders during the Sengoku period.
This bell faithfully captures the intense, expressive face of the Gojinjō mask, rendered in a beautiful ceramic glaze with deep earthy tones of green and brown. The back of the bell is marked with traditional kanji characters indicating its origin as a local craft from Wajima.
Please note: This item has been previously damaged and carefully repaired. Crack line remains on the surface, as shown in the photos. Despite the repair, it retains its powerful presence and cultural significance. A distinctive and rare piece of Japanese folk craft—ideal for collectors of traditional Japanese bells, masks, or regional pottery.
