This small dragon dorei (土鈴) is a zodiac clay bell crafted by Shōhō-gama (昭峰窯), a pottery brand developed by Seto Togei Co., Ltd. in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. The kiln is especially renowned for its auspicious zodiac figurines, blending traditional symbolism with refined ceramic craftsmanship.

Rendered in a rich metallic gold finish, the dragon is modeled in a compact, rounded form that enhances its charm while preserving its powerful presence. Its upward-tilted head, flowing whiskers, and defined scales evoke the classical image of the dragon as a celestial guardian. A vivid red accent at the mouth adds a bold contrast, while the red cord threaded through the top completes the traditional dorei form. Inside, a small clay pellet produces a gentle, resonant chime—believed to purify spaces and invite good fortune.

In Japanese tradition, the dragon (辰 / 龍) symbolizes strength, protection, prosperity, and control over water and the heavens. As a zodiac figure, it is considered one of the most auspicious signs, associated with success and dynamic energy. The luminous gold surface further reinforces themes of wealth and blessing.

Rooted in the long ceramic heritage of Seto—one of Japan’s historic pottery centers—Shōhō-gama’s work reflects both craftsmanship and celebratory spirit. This dragon dorei is not only a decorative ornament but also a talismanic object, carrying the bright sound and symbolism of protection, luck, and vitality.
