This dorei (土鈴) clay bell is inspired by the famous Usuki Stone Buddhas (臼杵石仏), one of Japan’s most celebrated collections of Buddhist stone carvings. Located in Usuki City in Ōita Prefecture, these monumental stone Buddhas were carved into soft volcanic rock during the late Heian to Kamakura periods (12th–14th centuries) and are designated as National Treasures of Japan.

The bell is modeled after the serene face of one of these stone Buddha figures. Its softly rounded form and calm expression reflect the gentle, contemplative style characteristic of the Usuki sculptures. The surface is finished with a mottled, stone-like glaze that evokes the weathered appearance of the original carvings, while subtle hand-painted details—such as the red lips and headband—add warmth and personality to the piece. A red cord passes through the top, allowing the bell to be hung as a decorative charm.

Like traditional dorei, the figure is hollow with a small pellet inside that produces a soft, delicate chime when moved. In Japanese folk belief, the sound of clay bells is thought to purify the surroundings and invite blessings.
