This dorei clay bell represents Tajima-gyū 但馬牛, the renowned breed of cattle native to Hyōgo Prefecture, famous as the source of the world-celebrated Kobe beef. Rendered in a stylized folk-art form, the cow is depicted with a compact, rounded body and expressive features, combining playful simplicity with regional identity.

The figure is painted in bold, contrasting colors—its black coat accented with white, red, and yellow details—while a decorative saddle cloth in vivid blue with floral motifs rests on its back. A purple cord is attached at the top, allowing the piece to be hung as a charm, while the hollow interior contains a small pellet that produces a soft, pleasant chime when moved.

In Japanese symbolism, the cow is associated with patience, strength, and steady progress, as well as agricultural prosperity and nourishment. As a representation of Tajima cattle, this bell also reflects regional pride, craftsmanship, and the deep connection between local culture and the land.

Like all dorei, it carries a protective meaning—the gentle sound of the bell is believed to purify the surroundings and ward off misfortune, inviting good luck and well-being. At the same time, its handmade character and slightly imperfect finish echo the spirit of wabi-sabi, where warmth, simplicity, and authenticity are valued over perfection.
