A rare and evocative vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Nagasaki, modeled as a Bateren / Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christian) figure.

This small bell is formed as a standing robed figure with a softly simplified face, eyes gently closed, and a white hood or mantle draped over the head. A small white cross is painted at the front of the garment, while a bright red cord at the top adds a striking accent. Its modest hand-shaped form and quiet expression give the piece a deeply contemplative and folk-art character.

The term “Bateren” (バテレン) comes from the Portuguese padre and was historically used in Japan to refer to Christian missionaries. The word “kakure” (隠れ) refers to the Hidden Christians, communities who preserved their faith in secret after Christianity was prohibited in Japan. Nagasaki holds a particularly important place in this history, as it was one of the main centres of early Christianity in Japan and later became closely associated with the story of hidden Christian communities.

As a regional folk craft, this dorei is not only a charming decorative object but also a small cultural keepsake reflecting one of Nagasaki’s most distinctive historical traditions. Like many Japanese clay bells, it combines a gentle sound with symbolic meaning, making it both a collectible folk toy and a meaningful souvenir.
