A charming vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kyoto, decorated with a hand-painted image of a maiko seen from behind, dressed in a pale pink kimono with a traditional floral hair ornament.
The bell has a softly rounded form with a light pink surface and a simple red hanging cord. The painted figure captures a distinctly Kyoto atmosphere, evoking the elegant world of Gion, maiko culture, and traditional Japanese dress. The reverse bears the inscription 京都 (Kyoto).
This piece has been previously repaired, and the repaired line remains clearly visible. Rather than diminishing its character, the repair gives the object a strong sense of wabi-sabi (侘寂) — the Japanese appreciation of imperfection, age, wear, and the beauty of objects that carry visible traces of their history. The repair becomes part of the story of the piece, showing that it was valued enough to be kept and restored rather than discarded.
