EM017 - Ema plaque from Nara Yakushiji 薬師寺
This Ema (絵馬) plaque comes from Nara, Yakushiji (薬師寺) and features the auspicious Buddhist deity Kichijōten (吉祥天女).
The front shows a graceful depiction of Kichijōten in a classical, almost Heian-inspired style. She is portrayed with a calm, benevolent expression, elaborately dressed in flowing robes with delicate patterns and bright accents of red, yellow, and pink. In her hand, she holds a wish-fulfilling jewel (宝珠, hōju)—a traditional symbol of prosperity, fulfillment, and divine blessing. The refined brushwork and restrained color palette give the figure an elegant, timeless presence, emphasizing spiritual beauty rather than realism.
On the reverse side, an explanatory text describes Kichijōten as a goddess of good fortune, beauty, abundance, and happiness, noting her status as one of the most revered female deities in Japanese Buddhism. The text highlights that her image—especially when holding the sacred jewel—represents the highest form of feminine virtue and auspiciousness, and that she has long been worshipped for blessings related to prosperity and well-being.
Made from natural wood with visible grain and finished with a deep indigo hanging cord, this Ema balances simplicity with reverence. It is both a devotional object and a small work of religious art, intended for visitors to write prayers or wishes—particularly those seeking good fortune, harmony, and a flourishing life—and offer them at Yakushiji.
