EM022 - Ema plaque from Hōzenji 法善寺
This striking Onigawara (鬼面瓦) Ema comes from Hōzenji (法善寺) in Osaka, a historic Buddhist temple best known for its moss-covered Fudō Myōō statue and long-standing connection to merchants and good fortune.
The ema features a three-dimensional miniature onigawara — a traditional demon-faced roof tile used on Japanese temples and castles. Historically, onigawara were placed along roof ridges to ward off evil spirits and protect buildings from misfortune, fire, and disaster. The fierce expression, bulging eyes, and sharp fangs symbolize strength and spiritual protection, making this ema a powerful talisman.
Across the top are the bold red characters 鬼面瓦, while the sides read 合格祈願 (prayer for exam success) and 家内安全 (family safety). A green label indicates it as a local folk craft product. The back is inscribed with 祈願 加賀美山 法善寺, along with the temple’s red seal, confirming its origin.
Finished with a purple cord and small bell, whose sound traditionally helps repel negativity, this ema beautifully combines architectural symbolism, protective folk belief, and temple devotion. It is both a meaningful charm and a distinctive collectible representing the protective spirit of Hōzenji Temple.
