FA13 - Rin-kesa from Japan Kōyasan 輪袈裟
A vintage traditional Rin-kesa 輪袈裟 from Kōyasan 高野山, the sacred center of Shingon Buddhism. A Rin-kesa is a small Buddhist stole worn around the neck as a simplified representation of the full monk’s robe. It is commonly used during temple visits, prayer, pilgrimage, sutra copying, and memorial services. Worn by both monks and lay practitioners, the rin-kesa expresses respect for Buddhist teachings and symbolizes devotion, mindfulness, and a personal connection to Buddhist practice in everyday religious life.
Woven in a deep indigo-blue fabric and finely stitched white kanji. The inscription 高野山 (Kōyasan) clearly identifies its origin, while the remaining characters and motifs reflect Buddhist devotion and temple tradition. The circular gold emblems are classic temple symbols, giving the piece a formal yet restrained presence.
The braided cords with traditional knots at the lower ends add both visual balance and symbolic meaning, representing continuity and commitment to practice. It comes with its original box, it was issued in connection with temple use at Kōyasan.
