FT424 - Izushi ware Zodiac Rat Craft 出石焼
This zodiac rat (干支・子) is a delicate example of Izushi ware (出石焼), crafted by Nagasawa Brothers Pottery (永澤兄弟陶製所)—a kiln known for preserving the elegant traditions of this distinctive ceramic style.
Izushi ware originates from Izushi in Hyōgo Prefecture, a region once known for its castle town culture. Unlike many Japanese ceramics that emphasize earthy textures and natural glazes, Izushi ware is celebrated for its fine white porcelain-like body, achieved through the use of high-quality local clay and refined production techniques.
Developed in the late Edo period, Izushi ware was influenced by porcelain traditions and aimed to create pieces of exceptional whiteness, thinness, and delicacy. Artisans often focus on purity of form and surface rather than heavy decoration, resulting in works that feel both lightweight and elegant. The aesthetic is sometimes compared to Chinese white porcelain, yet it retains a uniquely Japanese restraint and subtlety.
Rendered in a soft, pale celadon-white tone, the figure captures the rat in a simplified, almost sculptural form. Its smooth, matte-gloss surface and gentle curves reflect the hallmark aesthetic of Izushi ware: understated, serene, and quietly sophisticated. The minimal detailing—subtle contours of the body, a small incised eye, and a flowing tail—gives the piece a modern sensibility while remaining rooted in traditional craftsmanship.
As part of the Japanese zodiac (十二支), the rat symbolizes prosperity, intelligence, and new beginnings, often associated with the start of a cycle and the accumulation of wealth. Such figures are commonly displayed as auspicious ornaments, especially around the New Year, to invite good fortune and renewal.
