FT467 - Boar zodiac by Shōhō 昭峰
This delightful Year of the Boar (Inoshishi / 亥) zodiac figurine by Shōhō (昭峰) combines playful folk charm with auspicious Japanese symbolism. Crafted in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture — one of Japan’s most historic ceramic centers — the piece reflects Shōhō’s signature approach of blending traditional zodiac imagery with warm, approachable design.
The boar is depicted energetically perched upon a golden uchide no kozuchi (lucky mallet), a treasured symbol in Japanese folklore associated with prosperity, good fortune, and the granting of wishes. The vivid red “福” (fuku / blessing) character painted on the mallet further reinforces its meaning as a talisman of happiness and abundance. Delicate floral motifs along the boar’s body add a festive and celebratory touch, while the soft white glaze contrasted with gold accents creates an elegant seasonal aesthetic.
In Japanese tradition, the boar symbolizes courage, determination, protection, and forward momentum. As the final animal of the zodiac cycle, it is also associated with completing journeys and welcoming renewal for the year ahead. Combined with the lucky mallet motif, this figurine becomes a charming emblem of perseverance rewarded with fortune.
Developed by Seto Togei Co., Ltd., the Shōhō kiln is especially renowned for its finely crafted zodiac ornaments and auspicious ceramic figurines. Rooted in the centuries-old pottery heritage of Seto ware (Seto-yaki), these works embody both craftsmanship and joyful symbolism, making them beloved New Year decorations and collectible pieces of Japanese folk art.
