This charming vintage Hakata Doll (博多人形) dorei clay bell combines the refined beauty of Fukuoka’s celebrated doll-making tradition with a scene from one of Japan’s most beloved cultural spectacles: Nagaragawa Ukai (長良川鵜飼), the ancient cormorant fishing practice of the Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture.

Crafted in the style of a traditional dorei (earthenware bell), the figure features the gentle, rounded face characteristic of Hakata ningyō, painted with delicate eyes and a soft smile. The body is decorated with a miniature illustration of an ukai fisherman guiding trained cormorants from a wooden boat beneath the glow of a flaming basket torch. This centuries-old fishing method, practiced on the Nagara River for over 1,300 years, remains one of Japan’s most iconic living traditions and is closely associated with the Imperial Household.

The bell form adds another layer of meaning. Dorei have long been cherished as folk talismans believed to invite good fortune, ward off misfortune, and bring harmony to the home. The gentle sound produced by the clay bell was traditionally thought to purify spaces and attract auspicious blessings.

Blending regional craftsmanship with a celebrated scene of Japanese cultural heritage, this piece serves as both a decorative folk art object and a nostalgic souvenir of traditional Japan. Its compact size, soft white finish, and charming hand-painted details make it an appealing addition to collections of Hakata dolls, Japanese folk crafts, or vintage travel mementos.
