This charming Nikkō Three Wise Monkeys (日光三猿) carving is a miniature example of Japan’s beloved ittō-bori (一刀彫) woodcarving tradition. Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, the sculpture depicts the famous trio of monkeys embodying the proverb “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” (Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru), one of the most enduring symbols associated with Nikkō Tōshō-gū Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture.

Rendered in a rustic and highly stylized form, the three monkeys sit side by side with their characteristic gestures: one covering its eyes, one covering its ears, and one covering its mouth. The simple geometric carving marks and visible tool cuts highlight the handmade nature of the piece, while the warm wood grain enhances its folk-art character. Despite its small size, the sculpture successfully captures the wisdom and charm of the original motif.

The Three Wise Monkeys originated from the celebrated carved panel at Nikkō Tōshō-gū, where they symbolize moral conduct and the protection of purity during childhood. Over time, the image became one of Japan’s most recognized cultural icons, representing prudence, wisdom, and harmonious living.

Created as a traditional souvenir, this miniature carving reflects the craftsmanship and nostalgic appeal of postwar Japanese folk art. The inscription on the underside further suggests its connection to the Nikkō region, a destination renowned for its historic shrines, mountain scenery, and woodcarving traditions.

Both decorative and symbolic, this Nikkō Three Wise Monkeys ittō-bori serves as a reminder of timeless wisdom and good conduct. A wonderful addition to collections of Japanese folk crafts, shrine souvenirs, miniature carvings, or cultural artifacts inspired by one of Japan’s most famous symbols.
