This charming Cow Kōgō (香合) from Ikuta Shrine (生田神社) beautifully combines the Japanese tea tradition with the symbolism of one of Japan's most beloved shrine animals. Crafted in the form of a gently reclining white cow, this small incense container captures a sense of warmth and serenity through its rounded shape, soft expression, and hand-painted details.

Located in the heart of Kobe, Ikuta Shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with a history spanning over 1,800 years. Dedicated to Wakahirume-no-Mikoto, the shrine is especially revered as a place of blessings for love, harmonious relationships, and the fulfillment of heartfelt wishes. Shrine-themed crafts and commemorative objects from Ikuta Shrine are treasured as keepsakes carrying these auspicious associations.

The cow itself holds deep cultural significance in Japan. It is closely associated with Tenjin, the deified scholar Sugawara no Michizane, and symbolizes wisdom, patience, diligence, and steady progress. Visitors to Tenjin shrines often stroke sacred ox statues while making wishes for academic success and personal growth. The image of a resting cow further conveys peace, protection, and quiet strength.

This delightful kōgō is fashioned from white ceramic with subtle golden patches accenting its body, while its rosy cheeks and gentle smile lend it an endearing character. Opening at the center, it reveals a small compartment traditionally intended to hold incense during the tea ceremony, though today it may also be used to store tiny treasures, charms, or simply appreciated as a decorative object.

The underside bears the seal 「生田神社」 (Ikuta Shrine), affirming its connection to this historic shrine. Accompanied by its original paper box, the piece reflects the enduring Japanese appreciation for objects that unite beauty, symbolism, and everyday ritual.
