FT504 - Black Bobble-Head Lucky Ox Kurobeko 黒べこ
RARE. This charming Kurobeko (黒べこ) is a rare black variation of the beloved Akabeko (赤べこ), featuring the same iconic bobble-head (首振り / kubi-furi) design. While the classic Akabeko is traditionally painted red, this black version offers a distinctive interpretation, combining traditional craftsmanship with a striking, elegant appearance.
Handcrafted from papier-mâché and decorated with hand-painted facial markings, the ox carries a beautifully detailed woven saddle and a bundle of miniature straw rolls tied to its back. A small bell hangs around its neck, adding both movement and a gentle sound when displayed. The freely nodding head gives the figure its playful character, symbolizing resilience and a cheerful spirit.
Inspired by the famous folk toys of Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture, Akabeko has been treasured in Japan for centuries as a protective talisman. According to legend, a devoted red ox helped transport timber during the construction of Enzō-ji Temple, eventually becoming a symbol of strength, endurance, and divine protection.
The uncommon black color adds another layer of symbolism. In Japanese tradition, black often represents strength, stability, dignity, and protection, making this Kurobeko an especially meaningful ornament.
