A wonderfully characterful vintage Akabeko (赤べこ), the iconic red cow of Fukushima Prefecture and one of the best-known examples of Japanese hariko (張子) papier-mâché folk craft.
Akabeko is traditionally associated with the Aizu region of Fukushima, where the red cow has been made as a folk toy for generations. The name combines aka (赤), meaning “red,” and beko, the local Aizu dialect word for “cow.” Traditionally regarded as an auspicious figure, Akabeko became particularly associated with protection from illness, good health, perseverance, and good fortune.
This unusual example is especially decorative. The cow is painted in a vivid traditional red with bold white, black, and gold facial details, giving it the charmingly naïve expression characteristic of Japanese folk toys. Rather than the simpler decoration often seen on Akabeko, this piece is elaborately dressed with a woven textile saddle, braided cords, straw-like fibres and a small bell.
Made from lightweight papier-mâché and decorated by hand, the piece retains the small irregularities, surface wear and ageing that give vintage hariko their distinctive warmth. The combination of humble materials and symbolic decoration is characteristic of Japan’s regional folk-craft tradition, in which everyday toys often served simultaneously as souvenirs, protective charms and expressions of local identity.
