A charming vintage Kurashiki Hariko (倉敷張子) rabbit, a traditional papier-mâché folk toy from Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Kurashiki Hariko originated in 1869 (Meiji 2) and has been passed down through generations, with each piece traditionally made by hand using layers of paper, a white gofun coating, and hand-painted decoration.
Known as “Kubifuri Usagi” (首振うさぎ), or head-nodding rabbit, this delightful piece features a movable head that gently rocks or nods. Its rounded white body is decorated with bold green and gold motifs, while the rabbit has vivid red inner ears, red eyes, a blue nose and softly painted whiskers.
The design is especially appealing for its simple, expressive character and slightly whimsical proportions—qualities characteristic of Japanese kyōdo gangu (郷土玩具), or regional folk toys. Similar examples of this particular Kurashiki rabbit are described with traditional pine, bamboo and plum (松竹梅 / shōchikubai) decoration, an auspicious combination associated with resilience, longevity and good fortune.
