FT614 - Black Maneki Neko Clay Figurine 土人形
This Maneki Neko (招き猫) is a traditional Japanese tsuchi ningyō (土人形), or clay folk figurine, beautifully capturing the nostalgic character and simplicity of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
The figurine depicts a delightful black lucky cat with a raised paw, symbolically beckoning good fortune and protection. A deep red collar encircles its neck, while its front paw rests upon a golden koban (小判), a traditional oval-shaped Japanese gold coin bearing the auspicious inscription 開運 (kaiun), meaning good fortune or opening the way to luck.
Maneki Neko is one of the most beloved engi-mono (縁起物), or auspicious objects, traditionally displayed in homes, shops, and businesses to attract happiness, prosperity, and good fortune.
The black Maneki Neko (黒招き猫) holds a particularly meaningful place in Japanese folklore. Unlike the familiar white lucky cat, which represents general happiness and good fortune, the black variety is traditionally associated with protection against evil spirits, misfortune, and negative influences. It is regarded as a protective talisman, believed to help safeguard the home and its inhabitants.
Tsuchi ningyō are traditional Japanese clay figurines that have been produced in various regions of Japan for centuries. Typically formed using clay moulds and decorated with painted details, these folk crafts often depict animals, deities, zodiac creatures, and auspicious symbols.
