K10197 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Matsushima 松島

This omiyage kokeshi from Matsushima (松島) pays tribute to the great haiku poet Matsuo Bashō and his celebrated travel diary Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North).

The central figure represents Bashō himself, depicted with a serene, smiling expression, high white eyebrows, and a black cap. He wears a simple robe painted in deep reddish-brown tones, evoking the humble attire of a wandering poet-monk.

Beside him stands a vertical wooden plaque inscribed with 「奥の細道」, directly referencing his famous travel journal. In front, a round tablet bears flowing calligraphy, echoing one of his verses composed during his visit to Matsushima—one of Japan’s celebrated scenic views.

Matsushima, famed for its pine-covered islands scattered across the bay, deeply moved Bashō during his 1689 journey. Though legend says he was left nearly speechless by its beauty, the site became forever linked to his poetic pilgrimage. This kokeshi captures that cultural memory, blending regional craftsmanship with literary homage.

Carved from natural wood and mounted on a rustic bark-edged base, the piece retains the warmth and simplicity characteristic of souvenir folk art.
