K10208 - Omiyage Kokeshi of Twenty-Four Eyes 二十四の瞳
This charming omiyage kokeshi display is inspired by the beloved Japanese story “Twenty-Four Eyes” (二十四の瞳). At the center stands a kokeshi teacher figure, dressed in a simple kimono and holding a gentle, caring expression.
The story begins in the 1920s when Miss Oishi is assigned to teach at a small rural school. At first, the children are suspicious of her modern outlook and urban dress, but they quickly grow to love her warmth and kindness. The novel then spans nearly two decades, tracking the students' lives as they grow into adulthood. One by one, her beloved students are swept away by poverty, conscription, or tragedy. Some never return.
Crafted in the style of souvenir (omiyage) kokeshi, this piece combines folk-art simplicity with narrative depth. The natural wood grain, hand-painted details, and clustered composition create a warm, nostalgic tableau. More than a decorative item, it serves as a touching tribute to childhood innocence, education, and the passage of time in modern Japanese cultural memory.
