This Naruko kokeshi by Seiji Okazaki 岡崎斉司 (1926–2002) beautifully reflects the strength and refinement of the Okazaki family tradition. The doll features a rounded head with a serene, smiling expression. The softly arched brows and gently closed eyes convey warmth and quiet contentment, while the small curved mouth adds a sense of liveliness.

The body is cylindrical and elegantly proportioned, decorated with stylized chrysanthemum motifs rendered in subdued brown and black tones rather than bright red. The restrained palette allows the natural patina of the wood to dominate, giving the piece a mature and dignified presence. The surface shows a warm, time-softened sheen, enhancing its depth and character.

Born on February 5, 1926, in Naruko Yumoto, Miyagi Prefecture, Seiji Okazaki was the son of respected craftsman Hitoshi Okazaki. He began painting kokeshi in childhood and trained in woodturning under his father, already producing recognized works by 1941. During the postwar kokeshi boom, he became one of Naruko’s celebrated “Five Young Artists,” helping to revitalize traditional craftsmanship while developing his own expressive approach. He was deeply involved in kokeshi associations and served as chairman of the Bunnaruko Wood Toy Cooperative from 1965 to 1970, playing an important role in preserving and promoting the Naruko tradition.
