This Naruko kokeshi is a refined work by Koretaka Kakizawa (柿澤是隆), a skilled artisan known for his deep reverence for the Takakan kokeshi tradition. The doll features vivid red maple leaves gracefully cascading down the body, hand-painted in bold strokes. The head is adorned with an expressive and gentle face, typical of Koretaka’s style, reflecting a quiet elegance and an enduring connection to traditional craftsmanship.

Koretaka Kakizawa was born in Kawado, Miyagi Prefecture in 1940, the third son of a local fishmonger. His path to kokeshi began after junior high school, training under the renowned Morio Takahashi, and later honing his turning skills under Seto Muraki in Yamagata. He spent formative years working at the Yusa Fukuju workshop before establishing his own studio in 1971.

Koretaka was deeply invested in the revival of classic Takakan kokeshi styles, especially the works of Takahashi Kanji and the elusive Mori-ikka lineage. His artistic focus wasn’t merely on replicating old forms but interpreting their essence, bridging historical motifs with a personal, refined execution. This piece is a prime example of his ability to channel tradition through his own sensibility — maple motifs glowing against the light wood evoke a nostalgic warmth, hallmark of the Naruko aesthetic.

In later years, even after illness, Koretaka continued to produce kokeshi, sustaining his craft with dedication until his passing in 2016. His legacy lives on through his son, Korenobu Kakizawa, who continues the family tradition.
